From the Formation of Global Conventions to the Role of Soil Carbon in Addressing Climate Change

Zahra Fayzii from the Vice-Presidency for Research and Technology News Desk of the University of Tehran:
Dr. Farshad Amiraslani, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Geography, University of Tehran, referring to the development of international cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainable development, said that the growing and expanding environmental challenges during the twentieth century encouraged the United Nations to become more actively involved in environmental issues and paved the way for the establishment of international mechanisms in this field.
He added that this process reached an important turning point in 1992 with the Earth Summit in Brazil, a meeting attended by more than 108 countries that provided the basis for the formation of three major international environmental conventions.
According to Dr. Amiraslani, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the convention addressing desertification and the reduction of the effects of drought, and the climate change convention are three major frameworks that emerged from this process, each addressing a key aspect of global environmental challenges. The Islamic Republic of Iran is also a member of all three international conventions.
The University of Tehran faculty member also focuses, as part of his scientific activities, on the importance of soil carbon and its role in maintaining ecosystem health and addressing climate change.
Dr. Amiraslani's research in this field, focusing on the assessment and monitoring of soil carbon and its relationship with environmental changes, is closely connected to the challenges addressed by international environmental conventions, from combating desertification and land degradation to reducing the impacts of climate change and protecting biodiversity.
From this perspective, understanding the capacity of soil to store carbon and managing it scientifically can be an important approach to protecting natural resources, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing ecosystem resilience to climate change. An article by Dr. Amiraslani and an international group in Nature points to eight strategies for increasing soil carbon stocks.
