Doctoral Graduate Honored for Thesis in the Field of Medicinal Plants

The Vice-Presidency for Research and Technology News Desk of the University of Tehran:
In an interview with Dr. Mahdieh Arshadi-Bidgoli, graduate of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, on the occasion of her doctoral thesis titled “Genetic and Phytochemical Evaluation of Selected Ecotypes and Production of Drought Tolerant Synthetic Cultivar of Cumin (Cuminum Cyminum L.)” which was chosen as a model thesis at the 2025 Research and Technology Festival of the University of Tehran, the following has been reported:
Dr. Mahdieh Arshadi-Bidgoli explained the motivation behind choosing her thesis topic:
Cumin is one of the strategic products of the country and the most important cultivated medicinal plant, with a significant portion of its productivity affected by drought. Considering the shortage of improved genetic resources and the need for tolerant varieties, I felt there was a serious gap in this field. Combining genetic and phytochemical approaches could provide a more comprehensive understanding of drought tolerance mechanisms and offer practical solutions applicable to real farm conditions in the country.
She further described the research objectives:
The main goal was to identify superior ecotypes of cumin, elucidate the mechanisms of drought tolerance, and develop a synthetic cultivar tolerant to drought. This work was designed to address yield decline issues in arid and semi-arid regions and aimed to bridge the gap between laboratory knowledge and practical agricultural needs, thus providing a genetic and reliable foundation for future cultivar improvement.
Referring to the results of her research, she highlighted:
This study achieved four major accomplishments:
- Accurate identification of stable ecotypes using simultaneous genetic, physiological, and phytochemical indicators.
- Determining the most relevant traits related to drought tolerance as selection criteria in breeding programs.
- Identifying and introducing specific SSR markers associated with drought stress tolerance in cumin.
- Producing a high-performing, tall, and drought-tolerant synthetic cultivar of cumin.

Plant Responses to Drought Stress
She stated regarding the impact of these achievements on cumin production:
The impact of these achievements could be significant at three levels:
- Reducing the risk of yield reduction during drought years and increasing production sustainability.
- Providing a suitable genetic base for breeding programs and developing new, high-yield varieties.
- Improving farmers’ income, especially in water-scarce areas, where cumin is an economical and central crop.
This synthetic cultivar could soon serve as a reliable foundation for expanding cumin cultivation and developing its value chain.
Dr. Arshadi-Bidgoli commented on her selection for the Festival of Research and Technology at the University of Tehran:
Being chosen as the top thesis of the University of Tehran was a sign to me that my scientific and research efforts can have a national impact. This success has provided extra motivation to continue my research with greater dedication. This achievement is the result of a team effort, and I sincerely thank my supervisor, Dr. Seyed Mohammad Mahdi Mortazavian, who guided me with patience, accuracy, and a deep scientific perspective throughout the research process.
She added:
My future goals include completing the breeding stages of the synthetic cultivar, developing related genetic markers for drought tolerance, and collaborating with research centers for commercializing the results. I am also eager to have opportunities for faculty collaboration to play an active role in plant breeding, improving drought tolerance, and developing strategic varieties, thereby strengthening the research capacity of the University of Tehran to solve real agricultural problems.
